Shadows, Forward

In an age of headlong medical progress, what is that bright, shining line that defines the limits of the soul? Are we just the sum of our memories, of our decisions? Or are we more— perhaps the sum of our desires and our urges? Worst of all: Could we be the sum of our obsessions?
What becomes of us when another’s compulsions— be they trivial, or beastly— are folded into ours?

Rachael Anders, wife of a former pastor, encounters a near-alcoholic deputy sheriff who is plagued by concerns that the killer he brought to justice may not have been executed after all. Together they piece together a theory: Rachael’s husband Lee’s recent brain surgery has done what they were told was impossible—transplanted a shard of a condemned man’s dark psyche. Does Lee Anders’ burgeoning sexual violence, now powered by an intellect far beyond that of its original host, once again threaten women… starting with Rachael herself?.
